Mermen Finish 8-2,
New Coach Sought

Under Coach Ralph Law's
tutelage the University's swimming
teams have comped 8-2 records
the last three years. However, over
the summer, Mr. Law left his head
coaching position to take a job as
assistant principal in a public
school. The athletic department has
not found a suitable replacement as
yet. But this lack of a coach,
together with the loss of some key
swimmers, should not deter the
team from another successful
season.

Based on a solid nucleus of eight
returning lettermen, including four
record holders, the team is out to
better an 8-2 ledger.

Heading the list of returnees is
Alex Shaw, a burly second-year
man who smashed records in the
500 and 1000 yard crawls last
winter. Co-captain and record
holder Jay Wainright returns in the
One Meter Dive. Gary Chewning in
the 200 yard Individual Medley,
John Shrum in the 200 yard crawl
and Nelson Workman in the 50
yard crawl are the other returning
record holders.

Co-captain Brian Fuller and Don
Farmer are expected to do well in
the 200 yard breast stroke and 200
yard back stroke, respectively.

First-year man Jerry Rollins
from Douglas Freeman High School
in Richmond should aid the team in
odd-stroke events in their quest to
better their fifth place ACC
standing, a position they have held
the last three years.

Tragedy struck the team this
summer in the accidental drowning
death of Mike Daily. Daily, who
would have been second-year, was
the second leading scorer last
winter and holds the record for the
200 yard butterfly.

The Cavalier Mermen will once
again have to swim in old Memorial
Gym. But, hopefully, this will be
the last winter in the pool. Plans
call for an eight lane, Olympic-sized
pool to be constructed in the new
sports complex to be built near
University Hall. Groundwork for
the project will begin in January.
